Christmas wishes and wip Bananalicious Contest

christmas is approaching fast and I want to give a last life sign before the days of celebrating, feasting and presents arrive.

As mentioned before on my desk every sign, every brush stroke and every base building action is related to the Massive Voodoo Bananalicious Contest. I hope you guys are painting and preparing as well for this big online painting competition!

Momma Galina - Freebooters Fate Goblin Crew part 9

it happened that Malo and his crew sailed down the west coast of Longfall. As always on the hunt for new treasures. What they found was not gold but a new member for their crew. Momma Galina stranded on a small island when she was on the run from some armada soldiers. To get back to mainland she agreed to join Malo´s crew. At least as long as she is willing to do so...

Freebooters Fate - female Cultist

quick post from my site. A lot of work is ahead as I´m planning the banalicious contest and as always I´m making big plans which I will discard more and more the less time I have to finish my entries. But one has to make big plans to get the most out of it. Don´t forget to check out on your own:

While I´m doing my plans I don´t want to let you be without any pictures of painted miniatures. This one I finished a while back and it was a promo miniatures for the Freebooters Fate crew. You can also find some pictures of her in the latest expansion book "La Noche de Brujas".

Master Harlequina - Freebooter´s Fate Brotherhood

here are the pictures of the Master Harlequina I painted for a friend of mine. This miniature was a true joy to paint. I decided to go for yellow and purple as the main colours and I think it worked quite good. It was my first attempt of painting such a big area in yellow and I have to admit that it is really not an easy colour to paint. But with everything in your life it is the same... you need practice to get better. So, this was a really good practice.

Freebooters Fate tournament and a preview in future projects....

Ahoi pirates, brotherhood members, goblins or what ever you are!

Some days past by without a lifesign from my site. So, here I´m back still under the impressions of the first official Freebooters Fate tournament. What a great weekend! Everything was just perfect: organisation of the tournament, the games and chat with fellow Freebooters Fate players (old ones and new ones), the presence of the complete Freebooters Fate team (including the captain Werner Klocke).
We, a friend of mine (Kvoothe), his dad (Klempi) and me, did participate as a team (the Howling Wolves) and it was really a fun time and also quite successful. Kvoothe made a fantastic 2nd place, he even was first before the last game but got overtaken by 1 tournament point in the end. Klempi placed 7th and I placed somewhere in the mid-field. But therefore I took home the best painted crew award!

Incantenebra - Freebooters Fate Brotherhood

ok, here it is. The second crew member I painted for the brotherhood. First I did not like the model at all but after a few hours and first layers of paint the spark somehow ignited a fire and at the end I really like the overall look. Unfortunatelly the pictures somehow absorped the red colour. In real life it is much more brilliant.

Spada - Freebooters Fate Brotherhood

Hi there,

as mentioned before I´m knee deep in preparation for the Freebooters Fate tournament on nexts week s weekend. My Goblin Crew is nearly done, only one miniature is missing so I should make it right in time.

But this would have been to easy and I work best when I´m under pressure.... Therefore I promised a friend of mine to paint three miniatures for his crew which he wants to use on the tournament. Here´s the first one, a Spada deckhand for the brotherhood.

Carly Wench, Freebooter Lim015

finally I can show you the following pictures. Sometimes things happens out of the nothing. Earlier this year the Freebooter Miniatures Crew asked me if I would like to paint the this years limited edition miniature for the toy fair "Spiel 14" in Essen. They saw some of my miniatures I uploaded to the official forum and they seemed to like them. I was quite flabbergasted when they asked but for sure I couldn´t resist to take the chance.... and I had my fun with her. I struggled here and there and I learned a lot...

So, here she is, Carly Wench. One had the chance to buy her first at the toy fair. In the not so distant future she will be also available in stores and the online shop.

Captain Garcia

on one of the last saturdays me and a friend met for some Freebooters Fate playing. We tried to get a grap of the rules and had a nice game and learned a lot about the games mechanics. After the game I gave some painting instructions. I´m no speed painter at all, normally I take my time to finish a miniatures but the goal this time was to paint up a miniature within 2-3 hours. I know some techniques to speed up the process but this comes with a lack of quality (for sure). Well, I finished this piece in around 2 hours. The pictures are not as big as usual... ;)

Freebooters Fate Goblin Crew - part 8

Ahoi water rats,

Freebooters Fate tournament season is approaching very fast and Malo is getting quite nervous as his crew still lacks some dubloons to be competitive. And as Malo hates it to loose he put some serious pressure on me during the last days to get his mates done. Believe it... he can be very convincing... *ough... ok, ok, I´m back at the brushes....*

Freebooters Fate Goblin Crew - part 7

damn little bastards! I get them all!

Pegarata enters the board of Malo´s ship and supports his crew in the future. One thing is for sure: With him on board there will be never ever a problem with rats in the future...

Evolution of a banner

Hi folks,

you might have noticed that I changed my banner recently. It took a me a tremendous amount of time to do so as this was (and is) my first attempt of digital painting/designing something. In the end it came out quite good and I´m more than satisfied with the result. I used Inkscape and GIMP to realise my idea of a banner. Why I´m telling this? I have some work in progress pictures and maybe some of you are interested in the evolution of it.

As a reminder: this was the old banner my lovely wife made for me as an interim solution as I was far to lazy to do it on my own. It served me a good while and gave me the time to evolve the new one in my very own pace --- very slooooowwwww:

Sargento Maneto - Freebooters Fate

this time no goblin for the crew. This time it is my first imperial armada miniature and the latest release of the Freebooter Miniatures crew, Sargento Maneto. Painted it as the promo version for the Freebooter online shop a few weeks ago and this is the final result:

The Hag O' Hags

Hello readers,

let me introduce to you Granny Weatherwax. Some also call her "Aaoograha hoa" (She Who Must Be Avoided) or "K'ez'rek d'b'duz" (Go Around the Other Side of the Mountain). She is the most powerful witch on the Discworld and now she decided to give a visit.

Freebooter´s delight: Fruit in rum

Ahoi landlubbers,

today something completely different! As christmas is approaching quite fast and summer is about to leave I decided to do some fruit in rum for the winter time. Seems to be a freebooter year...

What´s it about? At various stages in summertime you take different fruits (cherries, plums, mirabelle, oranges, pears,….) at the top of there ripeness, mix them with sugar, add alcohol (rum) and spices (cinnamon, vanilla, anise,...) and store the mixture in a pot and let it incubate to develop some nice flavors. Sounds easy and indeed it is.

Back in the saddle and Freebooters Fate Tournament preparation

long time, no hear... but this has to change! Now! There was a lot of activity on my hobby desk during the last couple of weeks but unfortunately non of this can be showed here (at least at the moment). Hope that I can change this in the not so distant future. Some of it has to do with the appearance of this site. I´m slowly but constantly working on some design elements. It is a tedious work but in the end I think it is worth the effort.

Nonetheless it is time to go on with some content on this blog. I´m still working on the painting series/articles about how to paint the freebooter mercenaries box (see previous parts here: 1, 2, 3) but part 4 still needs some time to get finished. I somehow underestimated the time needed for finishing such an article... but I´m on it. In the meanwhile I decided to take part in the first official Freebooters Fate Tournament taking place in mid november and a one day Freebooter Tournament at the end of october. But there is one little problem....

Massive Voodoo Ultimate Paint Rack Indiegogo campaign

Hi folks,

here a short hint to an indiegogo campaign I think it is worth a look. It´s not a secret that I´m a great fan of the Massive Voodoo Team as I love the work they are doing and I learned a lot by simply browsing the blog or attending a beginners workshop and a private practice from Roman.

Now the guys come up with a paint rack to hold your colours and stuff. You might say to yourself: Ok, thats lame, I´ve seen such things hundreds of times before and the market is full of it! BUT this one comes with some specials and it is well-thought-out. It is low profile to save the workspace on your desk and it also is transportable and this makes it really stand out in my humble opinion. Together with a lid and a carry strap you can just grap your paint rack and you are ready to go with all your stuff. Just head off to your friend, to your painters meeting, on vacation or whereever else you want to go.

Review: Spirit of Adventure from Jonatán Monerris

Short facts:
Sculpture: Jonatán Monerris
Material: Resin
Number of parts of the kit: 3
Scale: 54 mm

Hi to all of you,
after the last review about the knight models Gandalf and Bilbo I decided to do another one. Again it is a somehow Middle earth related miniature or let´s say that it is at least inspired by a special Hobbit we all know. The sculptor of this little fellow is Jonatán Monerris and the distributor ist Heroes and Villians Miniatures and this is what it looks like:

Knight Models Review

Hi to all of you!

Welcome to my first review on this blog.

It is quite obvious that I´m a huge Lord of the rings fan and so this review is about miniatures from middle earth. To my opinion it was not a good time lately for miniature hobbyists and lord of the rings fans. Despite the fact that there is a big company (I don´t have to name them, do I?) out there holding the license for the production of lord of the rings / hobbit miniatures it seems as if they, for whatever reason, do not intend to expand the range further.... there had been some new miniatures related to the hobbit movies in the past but to be honest they did not convince me in total. As I´m a huge fan of the old lotr miniature range I´m not one of the hobbit range. I neither like the new design nor the new prices (35 Euro for 10 plastic standard soldiers... come on guys...). But as I´m mostly out of the gaming aspect of the hobby and in addition my lead mountain can provide Sauron with an army worth the might of mordor I´m not that sad as I would have been a few years ago.

Miniatures in Tabletop quality from start to end - part 2: priming

welcome to part two of this article series. As mentioned in the last part this time it is all about priming your miniatures and setting up a wet-palette for the painting process. Simple steps you might think but if done wrong it can lead you in a completly wrong direction and you will loose the fun during your painting process. The devil lies in the details here....

Your miniatures are well prepared now, but they need to be primed before getting painted. The primer will ensure that your paint has a strong bond to the surface. A good primed miniature is quite robust against abrasion, even if it is not sealed at the end. For priming I can recommend vallejo black primer (see picture in the background). I use an airbrush to apply it on the models. If you don´t own one don´t worry. The primer is also suitable for application with a brush.
For sure you can also use a normal spray can with black primer (but do this outside as this can get very messy and smelly if done inside....). Don´t use just a black acrylic colour as a primer gives you a stronger bond to the surface of your object than acrylic colours do.

Miniatures in Tabletop quality from start to end - part 1: preparation

ok, first some words to this article. This is the kick-off to a small series of articles on how I paint miniatures used for Tabletop games. As this miniatures are for gaming purposes I aim for a good but not superb (no display quality) painting quality. Also bearing in mind that you normally have to paint a whole bunch of miniatures for a game and therefore time saving techniques are very welcome.

The first part of the series is maybe not so interesting for experienced painters but sometimes I think it is quite good to see how other painters approach a special task and there is always something new out there to learn! Some of you may recognize that a lot of this techniques or approaches are well described on other blogs and web pages (e.g. Massive Voodoo, to name just one of them...). This is for sure right as I myself did get my input from somewhere and learned all the things by testing or by getting help from others. I don´t want to copy other articles or claim the merits for me to be the inventor of all this. My approach is a mixture of all the articles and techniques I learned (and still learn) in the past. I´m just a user as the most of us are and this is a summary of my way of painting and I don´t claim for the only way to travel the road. There are a hell lot of ways out there but if you like you can accompany me on a part of my way... :)

Ok, then. Enough introduction, let´s start with content....As we all know first thing to do when starting a new project is to prepare all the stuff needed. I always start with cleaning my desk.... ough... and checking back if everything is at hand for the preparation work. These are the supplies I use in the following steps:

Freebooters Fate Goblin Crew - part 5

so, it´s time for a goblin crew update. Two new mates reinforce the crew hopefully reaching a playable point value in the near future.

What do we have? First of all a specialist: Revlugg. I tried a more cartoonish style on this one, but I think I will return to the old style...

How to build a bridge - part 3

so, it´s time for the next part of the bridge. The building works are done now, so we have to proceed to the painting. This is not a detailed painting instruction, instead it is more a short guideline on how I did approach the painting task.
I also forgot to take pictures after every step because somehow the painting fun took over and I was not able to put the brush away at the one point or the other… but one should be able to see what I did… ;)

First step was to prime everything black and on top of that I sprayed some white to get a nice contrast and to make it easier for my eyes to see what is going on. Sorry no pictures of this step. For the priming I did use spray cans (the army painter ones).

Afterwards I used a chocolate brown and a yellowish brown to get some base coat on all the parts with the garden soil. I tried to bear in mind where the light will fall onto the bridge and where not. The parts in the shadows I painted much darker then the parts hit by the light. I did this wet in wet directly on the piece; just dilute your paint a bit and prewet your brush. Then pull the paints together and mix them diretly on the working piece. For the shadows I also used some vallejo dark sea blue.

I ended up with this. I decided that this is a good basecoat to start from for all the detail work.

How to build a bridge - part 2

ok, after all that goblin stuff it´s time for something different. In the meantime I did some more work on my bridge.

I searched for a base to put it onto and found some picture frame that suits quite good for my purpose. I did support the bridge with some aluminum foil as it was not high enough in my opinion. For the stone structure I used a sculpting tool and carved it into the plaster. So, this is what it looks like at the moment. You can also see what I want to put upon the bridge later on….

Freebooters Fate Goblin Crew - part 4

Ok, it´s time for more goblins... it´s always time for more goblins it seems. So, what do we have allready? A captain, 2 crew members, and a guy carrying a big hat... I think now we need a specialist. One that is able to make a big bada boom. One that you have to fright if you are a foe.

Freebooters Fate Goblin Crew - Part 3

ok, here he is, the second crew member. No more words. Just some pics.

Freebooters Fate Goblin Crew - Part 2

Ok, a mighty captain needs a crew. In case of Malo at least someone to shove around and let him do the dirty work in a brawl... and there is nothing more fun in an orcish life than a good brawl. So, here the first crew supporter of Malo´s gang.

Freebooters Fate Goblin Crew - Part 1

me again. Somehow I´m into serious blogging at the moment. I´m playing around with the design of the blog and start to like it more and more. Some changes that has to be made are still in my mind but first I have to design some graphics for it and I´m really a newbee to digital drawing or editing.... In my mind are some categories that I want to introduce with time and I want to increase and improve some how-to do articles. At the moment I show more or less just some pics of miniatures and projects. Hopefully this will change in future and the articles will get more "content" in it. At least this is my intention. We will see how far this will go and how good I´m in this and how much time I will find.... and, and, and...

Enough for the moment! I´m happy with the design so far and therefore I want to show some new pics to you. As mentioned in the post before I´m a huge Freebooter fan and over time I started to build up a goblin crew. First of all I want to show you the Captain. Here he is... the mighty Malo Gordab:

Evil fairy - Freebooter Miniatures

Hi folks,

I´m a huge fan of Freebooter Miniatures. I somehow love the sculpts from Werner Klocke and this one is one of my favorites. So I had to paint her up. It´s a while since I had this beauty under my brushes but I never showed her to someone. This has to be changed... now...

How-to build a bridge - Part 1

so, what is on my desk after all the eagles you might ask. For a bigger project that is up next I need a bridge. Therefor I decided to build up one from scratch. Here are two pictures of the finished raw modell.

I used a plastic box/container and glued plastic card  (1mm) into it that I brought into a curved shaped to achieve an arch. As glue I used a lot of hot glue to seal everything (did some tests with water) and poured some plaster into the box. After everything settled I broke up the box and ended up with the following raw form.

Aragorn - old stuff

Monday again, another week past since my last post. To change this and to let the break between the posts not become to long I decided to show you some old stuff. Pictures that are on my hard drive much to long now.

So, here is my first version of an Aragorn I painted up for a friend of mine 2 (?) years ago:

Yet another eagle

Hi all,

ok, some more eagle madness from my side. These are the only miniatures I bought from the GW Hobbit range so far. I really like them and despite the ridiculous price I couldn´t resist them (and on top I had a 10€ voucher....). The rest of the range either I don´t like the design or they are far to expensive in my eyes...

Enough blabla. Here are more pictures of another eagle:

Death from above - finished pictures

so, finally it has come to an end. A project that took me quite a while but is now finished. It was my re-entry into painting after a long time without any painting at all. So it might be that the paintjob is a little bit awkward here and there but it was a good practice to regain my brush control.

So here ist is; the finished "death from above" diorama:

back again! (?)

Hello folks,

ok, where to start? Nearly 8 month without any lifesign on this blog... but I´m still alive and still painting. So, what happened you might ask?

Ok, just one foto to explain:
